Salmon
When?
Salmon fishing is permitted from March 1 to October 14. Salmon begin ascending during April and May; however, high water flow is required to assist this process. Spawning occurs in August and peaks during September and October. October 14 is the last day of the season.
Where?
The salmon are caught at their holding spots, as they do not actively feed in freshwater during the spawning migration. Good spots for salmon fishing are at the Lagan River’s outlet to the sea and at Åmot, where the Smedjeån flows out, as well as at Reningsverket (sewage treatment plant), Per-Karls Hall – where a lot of fish are also caught on the fly with a fly rod – further at Revet and Halmstadhålan, just downstream of the boat docks in Laholm, and at Gröningen near the upper boundary of the fishing area (see map).
How?
Primarily salmon is caught by spinning with trolling spoons or artificial flies as well as fly-fishing. There are major discussions on which colour fly is most suitable, however, since the water in the autumn is dyed by humus, it might be worth trying yellow/red or orange. Traditional bait such as Toby or similar are also approved. Fishing with worms and shrimp is also permitted.
Sea trout
When?
Sea trout fishing is permitted from March 1 to October 14.
Where?
The sea trout feeds both in the spring when the so-called ”greenlander” ascends and during spawning in the autumn. Fishing can take place along the whole length of the Lagan until the middle of April. When the water temperature rises, the sea trout starts pushing out towards the sea. In May, the fish abandon the Lagan for the sea.
How?
During March and April, when the water is coldest, sea trout stay close to the bottom. Baits weighing 28–40 grams are recommended during this period. Shiny, thin baits, such as “Wiggler,” usually work well in spring. Yellow, orange, or red flies may also be effective. In autumn, sea trout often prefer “tube flies,” although shiny silver baits also work well.
European flounder
When?
Flounder fishing is permitted from March 8 to December 31, but most fishing occurs from mid-October until the end of the season. The best-quality flounder is caught in November and December.
Note: Flounder permits are not sold until October 15.
Where?
Good fishing locations range from Daggan (the upper limit for flounder fishing; see map) to the outlet of the Lagan into the sea. Popular spots include the boat pier on the south side of Lagan and the area around the river mouth on the north side.
How?
Flounder fishing is done by angling with sandworms or shrimp; only fishing rods are permitted. Multiple hooks may be used. Since Lagan is a regulated river with varying water levels, different sinker weights are recommended. Fishing permits are available as season permits or day permits specifically for flounder fishing.
